2018 Walla Walla Basin Leasing & Purchase Program

Do you have water rights on the Walla Walla River, Mill Creek or Touchet River?

Washington Water Trust is actively looking for water rights holders who may be interested in leasing or selling water rights for instream flow.

As many of you know, flows drop considerably across the Walla Walla Basin each year, especially during times when fish need them most. WWT has worked closely with local irrigators and other partners over the past decade to help restore flows in the Walla Walla and it's our hope to create more of these win-win solutions in the coming year.

WWT currently has funding to purchase and to lease water rights for 1-year, 5-year or 10-year terms, during the irrigation season from April 1st through November 15th annually, beginning in 2018. We can also provide expertise and resources to help improve irrigation and water management operations. We are interested in working with all water right holders, from individuals to irrigation districts and municipalities.

If you, or others you may know, are interested in leasing you water rights, receiving another offer and/or exploring other opportunities available to you, please do not hesitate to contact  WWT Project Manager, Kristina Ribellia at (509) 607-3513 or at kristina@washingtonwatertrust.org. Kristina or another member of staff will contact you soon.

As always, WWT is available to work with you on a confidential basis.

Funding is available, but limited. Please express your interest by October 15, 2017.

Please note:

  • For 5 and 10 year leases, the extent and validity of your water right will ultimately be determined by the Department of Ecology. We are available confidentially to help you better understand your water rights and what you would expect from Ecology if you choose to move forward; also
  • If you share a water right or place of use with other water right holders, they will either need to enter into a lease or purchase agreement with WWT or be willing to administratively divide their portion of the water right. This can be time intensive and will need to be addressed prior to signing an agreement. WWT is available to assist with this process.
